Improve Your Marketing to Attract More Nonprofit Clients, in Seven Weeks

October 5 – November 20, 2015

Designed to help owners of consulting and freelancing businesses at all stages, from start-up to expansion,
grow their business, so they can live their own versions of the sweet life.

Kivi Leroux Miller

Kivi Leroux Miller

I love working for nonprofit clients. To me, it’s the sweet life.

If you are reading this, odds are that you agree.

Maybe you’ve left a nonprofit staff job to give yourself more flexibility. Maybe you are tired of the corporate grind and want to build some do-gooding into your work day. Maybe you are fresh out of college and looking to make your own way as an entrepreneur. Maybe you’ve been at this for awhile, and want to get even better at attracting your ideal nonprofit clientele.

Let’s face it: Working for nonprofit clients isn’t always the easiest career choice. Most nonprofits aren’t exactly loaded with cash for consultants. Nonprofit decisionmaking about working with consultants can take what feels like f-o-r-e-v-e-r.  Traditional sales tactics turn off a lot of nonprofits.

So how do you make it work? How can you structure your own marketing so that you really do succeed? How do make the dream of the sweet life your own reality?

That’s what this coaching program is all about. Please read this page carefully, as it’s full of details. I’m also happy to answer any questions you have about it. Just email me at

I hope you’ll join us, and find your own version of the sweet life, making a good living doing work you love with clients who are changing the world!

The Seven-Week Schedule

October 5 – November 20, 2015

All sessions will be recorded in case you can’t join us live.

With each session, you’ll receive recommended reading, a worksheet with powerful questions to get you thinking, discussion questions in the Facebook Group, and live coaching of group members on their specific questions.

Session #1: Why Nonprofits and Why You?

Tuesday, October 6, 12:30 – 2:00 pm Eastern (9:30 am Pacific)

What’s so special about working for nonprofits in your mind? During this first session, we’ll look at how working for nonprofit clients is different from serving other kinds of clients (and it most definitely is). But it’s also a big and diverse sector — what kind of clients are the best match for you? We’ll also explore what’s so special about YOU. Why should nonprofits trust you to help them? What do you offer that others don’t?

Session #2: Packaging and Pricing Your Products and Services

Thursday, October 8, 12:30 – 2:00 pm Eastern (9:30 am Pacific)

During our second session, we’ll look at ways to define and describe the products and services you want to provide to nonprofits. How do you talk about the work you do in ways that connect to nonprofit problems and needs? We’ll also look at the perennial question: How much should you charge? We won’t give you specific pricing recommendations, but we will talk about different ways to think about pricing and several models for making your own decisions about fees.

Session #3: Attracting Clients with Content Marketing and Networking

Tuesday, October 13, 12:30 – 2:00 pm Eastern (9:30 am Pacific)

Two of the best strategies for attracting nonprofit clients are content marketing and networking. We’ll explore both during this session. Our content marketing conversations will include tactics like blogging, newsletters, free downloads, books, training, and public speaking. In our networking conversations, we’ll explore in-person networking, social media, word-of-mouth, using testimonials, and more.

Session #4: Setting Up Marketing Experiments to See What Works for You

Thursday, October 15, 12:30 – 2:00 pm Eastern (9:30 am Pacific)

The best way to learn what works for you and your business is to give something new a try. But making the time to do that is hard, and it can feel like a big risk. We help you with both in this coaching program by building that experimentation into the schedule. Based on what piques your interest in the previous weeks, we’ll help you structure a quick experiment that you can implement in the next three weeks and learn something new about your marketing strategy. We’ll also give you a nice big list of ready-made experiments if you have trouble coming up with one on your own.

Marketing Experiments in Action – Three Week Break from Live Calls

After the first four calls, we’ll take a three-week break from online meetings to put our marketing experiments to work and see what we learn. During this time, we’ll stay in touch via the Facebook Group and email. If you are really struggling, this is also a good time for some private coaching.

Session #5: Sharing Insights from Our Marketing Experiments with Each Other

Tuesday, November 10, 12:30 – 2:00 pm Eastern (9:30 am Pacific)

We’ll reconvene this week to share with each other what we learned in our real-world marketing experiments. You’ll benefit not only from your own insights on what you tried, but learn from the real-time experiments of others in the program too.

Session #6: Nonprofit Panel Q & A

Thursday, November 12, 12:30 – 2:00 Eastern (9:30 am Pacific) – Subject to change based on panelists’ schedules

During this session, you’ll have the opportunity to talk directly with a panel of 3-5 nonprofit staff who frequently hire consultants and freelancers and ask them your questions to help you further refine your own marketing strategies.

Session #7:  Experienced Consultants Q & A

Tuesday, November 17, 12:30 – 2:00 Eastern (9:30 am Pacific) – Subject to change based on panelists’ schedules

During this session, we’ll bring in a panel of 3-5 experienced consultants who’ve seen and done it all, so you can get some additional answers to your questions and words of wisdom from those who’ve been there before.

Session #8:  Wrap Up and Moving Forward

Thursday, November 19, 12:30 – 2:00 pm Eastern (9:30 am Pacific)

In our final session, we’ll try to answer any remaining questions, review how far you’ve come, and share plans for moving forward!

Additional Private Coaching during and after the Group Program

If you select the Group Program + Private Coaching Option, you and I will also talk privately twice a month, October – December, to work directly on your marketing challenges and ideas.

What’s So Special About This Program?

I’ve put a lot of thought into this program, because I wanted it to be a truly unique and special experience for you.  Here’s how it’s different . . .

Exclusive Focus on Nonprofits as Clients

Unlike other small business coaching programs, this one focuses exclusively on building a clientele serving nonprofit clients.

Built Around Your Business

It’s built around your questions, your business development, and your success.  Our live online meeting sessions will be designed around questions submitted by you and other participants and will include live coaching of participants through their real-world challenges and decisions.

Trying It Out in Real Time

Don’t you hate it when you get a great idea during a training session or from a book, but you don’t have time to see if that great idea will actually work for you? At the core of this program, right in the middle of the schedule, is time and support to try something new.

We’ll help you design a short-term marketing experiment — one you can try in just three weeks — and learn something new that helps you make better decisions about your marketing strategy and your business development.

Sharing Openly with Other Consultants

There is enough work to go around. That’s a core tenet of this program. When you work with other people who believe that too, you can learn amazing things from each other and everyone’s businesses will grow faster.

You might even meet some new business partners and make new friends for life!

Learning from Real Experience with Nonprofits

I have been working for nonprofit clients for more than 15 years as a consultant, trainer, and coach. I’ve worked closely with dozens of nonprofits of all sizes, mentored more than 50 people in our Nonprofit Communications Director Mentoring Program,  and talked with literally thousands of nonprofit staff before, during, and after the training I’ve provided online and in person for the last decade.  I won’t hold back, sharing whatever you want to know from my experience.

In addition, you’ll also be able to tap into others in the group, and into two expert panels, one of nonprofit staff who hire consultants and another with experienced consulting professionals.

 Additional Private Coaching Available

If you’d like to work with Kivi privately on phone calls twice a month, October – December, to work on your specific challenges and marketing ideas, select the Group + Private Coaching option.

Three different aspects made the Coaching Program extremely valuable for me:
  • Kivi. Her expertise and perspective and the course material designed to make us think and act.
  • The Nonprofit and Consultant Panels. Hearing from a group in the trenches added a dimension to my understanding of the nonprofit world and how consultants best help in those trenches.
  • The Other Members.  Everyone’s attitude of being there for each other, sharing experiences, challenges, and just general helpful info — was for all of our benefit. I feel part of a team that has my back, and I hope to stay in touch with everyone!

This program was a goldmine of information about how to market to nonprofits. Before the program, I felt like I was all over the place, trying to do everything at once and getting nowhere. The coaching taught me that focusing my energy on one or two areas is okay, as long as I measure what I’m doing and learn from the experience. I think I gained just as much insight from everyone else’s coaching as I did from my own, and the group contact was an exceptional source of support. Overall, I feel a lot more confident in the message I’m sending about my services.

I endorse this program 100% to all consultants who are up and coming, or just getting started. Kivi is truly gifted and has wonderful insights (and she shares it generously!) on what it means to be a consultant, the required nuts and bolts, but she also ensures that she considers every participant’s questions and desired outcome for this program. My peers were a blessing, as they helped me realize that many of us struggle with same/ similar things, and together, we would weigh in on someone else’s issues, which indirectly addressed our own questions! The peers also connected well during our program, and decided to start a monthly accountability and Q&A call to help one another, which is great for someone getting started or looking for a some motivation. Come to this program with an open heart to see how it has been done before, being prepared for each day and be ready roll up your sleeves and get to work, while sharing and meeting amazing new friends along.

Sowmya Qureshi

I recommend “Get Nonprofit Clients” to anyone who is thinking about working with nonprofits. I gained insights on how nonprofits like to be approached for consulting agreements, and inside information from the “pros” on topics like pricing and which nonprofits they liked working with.

  • You know you want to build your business around serving nonprofit clients. You see using your talents to help the nonprofit sector as your path to the sweet life!
  • You are ready to devote some serious time to marketing your services to nonprofits. You are ready to do the work to get the clients, which includes making some decisions and trying some new things, which can be, admittedly, a little scary. But you are up for it!
  • You welcome and embrace the opportunity to talk with other consultants about marketing strategies. You understand that there really is enough work to go around, and that we can all help each other by sharing what works and what doesn’t.
  • You are willing to be both transparent about your approaches but respectful and protective of other people’s privacy and ideas. We need to trust each other or this thing is not going to work well.

Please Don’t Register for This . . .

  • If you are not willing to share your business strategy with other consultants in the group. Much of the value in a group coaching program comes from sharing among the group members. If you want to hire me to work with you one-on-one, so you don’t have to share your ideas publicly, that’s fine too, but that’s a different service, and that starts at $5,000.
  • If you think it’s too expensive. I know the value of this course (it’s worth more than I am charging) and I know that if you get all you can out of it, it will more than pay for itself. But I can’t spend any more time than it took to write this page on convincing you of that personally. Make your own choice based on what you see here.
  • If you see nonprofits as just one more in a long list of types of customers for your business. This is really meant for people who want to specialize in serving nonprofit clients. Sure, you might also serve a business or government client too, but this is really focused on nonprofits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are you doing this, and offering to help other consultants? Aren’t they competition?

I’ve always believed that there is enough work to go around. And I love my work so much that I want to encourage others to work in the nonprofit sector too.

Back in 2009-2010, I ran a coaching program called “Writing for Nonprofits” for freelance writers. Both the participants and I enjoyed it, but I was working on my first book at the same time, so I put the program on the shelf after a few sessions.

I continued to get emails from communications pros asking when I was going to restart the program. Then as the first book came out, and then the second, and as the profile of continued to grow, nonprofit consultants of all kinds — not just writers — asked if I would coach them in growing their own businesses serving nonprofits. They wanted to live the sweet life too.

As happens with the natural ebb and flow of businesses, and our own personal interests, I’m once again excited about coaching other professionals serving nonprofits. I’ve redesigned the program to work for a broader range of consultants, at any stage of growth.  This new program reflects what I’ve learned about coaching others in the last several years (including becoming a certified executive coach myself) and where I think the nonprofit sector is today and will be tomorrow.

I ran this program as described on this page in early 2015 and we all had a great time working together and learning from each other, so I am reopening the program now.

What happens after I sign up?

After you pay the fee, you will receive an email from me with a few items:

  • A link to a brief survey so I can get to know you better, understand your goals for this program, and get your top five questions you want answered by the end.
  • A link to the private Facebook Group
  • The connection details for our first online meeting.

I will also invite you to a course folder on Google Drive.

Are you going to offer this again soon?

Probably not until same time next year (Fall 2016).

Is there a money-back guarantee?

Yes. If you complete the program, and are not satisfied, you may request a full refund. However, if you drop out before completing the program, you will not be eligible for a refund.

Does this include any one-on-one coaching time?

The frequent group calls and Facebook group will include plenty of time to get everyone’s needs met, but I am happy to have a private call too, assuming you are also actively participating in the group sessions. The three-week “Marketing Experiment” window in the schedule is a good time for these private calls.

Can I get private coaching instead (without the group experience)?

Yes, but it does cost more. See the private coaching options.

I’ve read the whole page, but am still not sure this is a good fit for me. I have questions.

Happy to answer them, and will be honest with you if I agree that this is not an ideal fit. Feel free to email me at
