With each session, you’ll receive recommended reading, a worksheet with powerful questions to get you thinking, discussion questions in the Facebook Group, and live coaching of group members on their specific questions.

Session #1: Why Nonprofits and Why You?

Tuesday, October 6, 12:30 – 2:00 pm Eastern (9:30 am Pacific)

What’s so special about working for nonprofits in your mind? During this first session, we’ll look at how working for nonprofit clients is different from serving other kinds of clients (and it most definitely is). But it’s also a big and diverse sector — what kind of clients are the best match for you? We’ll also explore what’s so special about YOU. Why should nonprofits trust you to help them? What do you offer that others don’t?

Session #2: Packaging and Pricing Your Products and Services

Thursday, October 8, 12:30 – 2:00 pm Eastern (9:30 am Pacific)

During our second session, we’ll look at ways to define and describe the products and services you want to provide to nonprofits. How do you talk about the work you do in ways that connect to nonprofit problems and needs? We’ll also look at the perennial question: How much should you charge? We won’t give you specific pricing recommendations, but we will talk about different ways to think about pricing and several models for making your own decisions about fees.

Session #3: Attracting Clients with Content Marketing and Networking

Tuesday, October 13, 12:30 – 2:00 pm Eastern (9:30 am Pacific)

Two of the best strategies for attracting nonprofit clients are content marketing and networking. We’ll explore both during this session. Our content marketing conversations will include tactics like blogging, newsletters, free downloads, books, training, and public speaking. In our networking conversations, we’ll explore in-person networking, social media, word-of-mouth, using testimonials, and more.

Session #4: Setting Up Marketing Experiments to See What Works for You

Thursday, October 15, 12:30 – 2:00 pm Eastern (9:30 am Pacific)

The best way to learn what works for you and your business is to give something new a try. But making the time to do that is hard, and it can feel like a big risk. We help you with both in this coaching program by building that experimentation into the schedule. Based on what piques your interest in the previous weeks, we’ll help you structure a quick experiment that you can implement in the next three weeks and learn something new about your marketing strategy. We’ll also give you a nice big list of ready-made experiments if you have trouble coming up with one on your own.

Marketing Experiments in Action – Three Week Break from Live Calls

After the first four calls, we’ll take a three-week break from online meetings to put our marketing experiments to work and see what we learn. During this time, we’ll stay in touch via the Facebook Group and email. If you are really struggling, this is also a good time for some private coaching.

Session #5: Sharing Insights from Our Marketing Experiments with Each Other

Tuesday, November 10, 12:30 – 2:00 pm Eastern (9:30 am Pacific)

We’ll reconvene this week to share with each other what we learned in our real-world marketing experiments. You’ll benefit not only from your own insights on what you tried, but learn from the real-time experiments of others in the program too.

Session #6: Nonprofit Panel Q & A

Thursday, November 12, 12:30 – 2:00 Eastern (9:30 am Pacific) – Subject to change based on panelists’ schedules

During this session, you’ll have the opportunity to talk directly with a panel of 3-5 nonprofit staff who frequently hire consultants and freelancers and ask them your questions to help you further refine your own marketing strategies.

Session #7:  Experienced Consultants Q & A

Tuesday, November 17, 12:30 – 2:00 Eastern (9:30 am Pacific) – Subject to change based on panelists’ schedules

During this session, we’ll bring in a panel of 3-5 experienced consultants who’ve seen and done it all, so you can get some additional answers to your questions and words of wisdom from those who’ve been there before.

Session #8:  Wrap Up and Moving Forward

Thursday, November 19, 12:30 – 2:00 pm Eastern (9:30 am Pacific)

In our final session, we’ll try to answer any remaining questions, review how far you’ve come, and share plans for moving forward!

I have been working for nonprofit clients for more than 15 years as a consultant, trainer, and coach. I’ve worked closely with dozens of nonprofits of all sizes, mentored more than 50 people in our Nonprofit Communications Director Mentoring Program,  and talked with literally thousands of nonprofit staff before, during, and after the training I’ve provided online and in person for the last decade.  I won’t hold back, sharing whatever you want to know from my experience.

  • If you see nonprofits as just one more in a long list of types of customers for your business. This is really meant for people who want to specialize in serving nonprofit clients. Sure, you might also serve a business or government client too, but this is really focused on nonprofits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are you doing this, and offering to help other consultants? Aren’t they competition?

I’ve always believed that there is enough work to go around. And I love my work so much that I want to encourage others to work in the nonprofit sector too.

Back in 2009-2010, I ran a coaching program called “Writing for Nonprofits” for freelance writers. Both the participants and I enjoyed it, but I was working on my first book at the same time, so I put the program on the shelf after a few sessions.

I continued to get emails from communications pros asking when I was going to restart the program. Then as the first book came out, and then the second, and as the profile of NonprofitMarketingGuide.com continued to grow, nonprofit consultants of all kinds — not just writers — asked if I would coach them in growing their own businesses serving nonprofits. They wanted to live the sweet life too.

As happens with the natural ebb and flow of businesses, and our own personal interests, I’m once again excited about coaching other professionals serving nonprofits. I’ve redesigned the program to work for a broader range of consultants, at any stage of growth.  This new program reflects what I’ve learned about coaching others in the last several years (including becoming a certified executive coach myself) and where I think the nonprofit sector is today and will be tomorrow.

I ran this program as described on this page in early 2015 and we all had a great time working together and learning from each other, so I am reopening the program now.

Are you going to offer this again soon?

Does this include any one-on-one coaching time?

The frequent group calls and Facebook group will include plenty of time to get everyone’s needs met, but I am happy to have a private call too, assuming you are also actively participating in the group sessions. The three-week “Marketing Experiment” window in the schedule is a good time for these private calls.

Can I get private coaching instead (without the group experience)? 

Yes, but it does cost more. See the private coaching options.
